Carbon Dioxide CO2

ABOUT CARBON DIOXIDE GAS

Carbon dioxide gas is obtained naturally from underground or from waste flue gas. Carbon dioxide exists simultaneously in solid, liquid, and gaseous states at -56.6ºC and 4 bar pressure. In liquid form, carbon dioxide can be stored in single-walled tanks with internal cooling systems or cryogenic tanks, insulated horizontally or vertically with external insulation materials. Carbon dioxide is stored at pressures of 13–20 bar and temperatures of -35ºC–55ºC and transported by trucks.

Carbon dioxide is a corrosive gas. For dry gas at ambient temperature, normal materials are suitable; below -30ºC, only low-temperature carbon steel, austenitic stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and alloys of these two are suitable. If carbon dioxide dissolves in water in an oxygen environment at high pressures, it is advisable to use carbon dioxide-resistant materials.

NATURAL CARBON DIOXIDE

Natural carbon dioxide is obtained from underground sources. In Turkey, it is mainly produced in the Denizli Kızıldere basin, the Niğde Kemerhisar basin, and the Aksaray basin. Carbon dioxide, which first began to be produced naturally in the 1990s, was produced in the Niğde basin by Güney Doğalgaz.

Globally, natural carbon dioxide originates from four main sources:

1. Magmatic origin

2. Metamorphic origin

3. Geothermal origin

4. Sedimentary origin

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Molecular weight: 44.01 g/mol

Density (liquid, at -56.6ºC): 1.1778 kg/dm³

Density (gas, 0ºC, 1 atm): 1.97 kg/m³

Critical temperature (1 atm): 31.1ºC

Sublimation temperature: -78.50ºC (transition from solid phase to gas phase)

It is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic gas that is heavier than air.

POINTS TO CONSIDER

Carbon dioxide gas has a suffocating vapor form. It is 1.53 times heavier than air. The occupational exposure limit (TLV) is approximately 5000 Vpm. Carbon dioxide does not exist in liquid form at atmospheric pressure; it can exist in liquid form in a closed container at 4 bar. The solid phase of the gas is called dry ice and can cause cold burns on the skin. Atmospheric pressure contains approximately 0.035% carbon dioxide.
